Calvin Newton was a former member of the Black Panther Party who later became a Christian minister. He joined the Black Panther Party in the late 1960s and was a prominent figure in the organization's activities in Oakland, California.
However, Newton's life took a dramatic turn in 1974 when he was involved in a shootout with police officers that left one officer dead and Newton wounded. He was convicted of manslaughter and spent several years in prison.
After serving his sentence, Newton converted to Christianity and renounced his former life of violence and activism. He became a minister and dedicated his life to helping others turn away from crime and violence. Newton's transformation was the subject of the documentary film "The Redemption of Calvin Newton."
